Generous Gift of Islands adds to the 100 Wild Islands Legacy

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust announced today the protection of two spectacular coastal gems, Laybolt and Witchwood Islands, the latest additions to the land trust’s iconic 100 Wild Islands coastal legacy campaign.

The 96 and 42 acre islands have been entrusted to the care of the Nature Trust through a generous donation by two Nova Scotian families. 45 years ago, Sally and Ravi Ravindra, along with another couple who wish to remain anonymous, purchased Laybolt Island, off the coast of Little Harbour on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. The families saw a wonderful opportunity to keep at least one spectacular part of Nova Scotia’s beautiful coastline wild.

When they heard about the Nature Trust’s 100 Wild Islands Legacy Campaign, the idea crystalized that their islands should be part of this bold vision to protect a vast coastal island wilderness area on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore.

The islands are the most southerly among a group of over 200 beautiful, undeveloped islands nestled together on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore, which have been recognized as a globally significant coastal wilderness.

Treasured Islands: 100 Wild Islands featured in Canadian Geographic Magazine

Nova Scotian environmentalist and journalist Silver Donald Cameron has written a beautiful article about the 100 Wild Islands, entitled Treasured Islands, for the December 2015 issue of Canadian Geographic Magazine. The magazine hit newsstands in January, and features stunning photography by nature photographer Nick Hawkins.

Environmental Icon Yvon Chouinard Helps Protect Nova Scotia’s 100 Wild Islands

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust announced exciting support and endorsement for their landmark coastal island conservation initiative, the 100 Wild Islands Legacy Campaign at our 18th Annual Dinner and Auction on Oct. 22. Our efforts to protect one of North America’s last wild and ecologically rich coastal archipelagos received a major investment and the accolades of one of the planet’s most iconic environmental business leaders and philanthropists, Yvon Chouinard.

Headwaters to Headlands: New Nature Trust Property Connects Land and Sea

The 100 Wild Islands to be Featured on Upcoming TV Series

The 100 Wild Islands Legacy Campaign‬ will be featured in a beautiful TV series, called The Living Beach, which is being filmed by Arcadia. The series will air on the Love Nature channel, and potentially others. We'll keep you posted, and let you know when it will air!

This interest in the 100 Wild Islands showcases just how significant these islands are. We have an incredible opportunity to protect an entire, intact, and dynamic coastal ecosystem, where natural processes can develop, evolve and change, completely undisturbed by human shoreline ‘hardening’, development and other interventions. This is an incredible place for ‘living beaches’ and other coastal habitats and species to thrive, and it is also an unparalleled place for research to increase our understanding of truly natural coastal ecology and processes.

100 Wild Islands Campaign Gets Exposure in the Wall Street Journal

This article highlights nicely that island conservation is a concern globally, and that land trusts are an important part of ensuring we protect important island ecosystems. The 100 Wild Islands Campaign Takes Major Step Forward

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust’s ambitious campaign to protect the 100 Wild Islands on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore received a major conservation boost. All Crown islands within the archipelago were officially designated as Wilderness Area by the Province today. Together with the Nature Trust’s achievements in protecting private islands, 5,000 acres of ecologically rich and spectacular coastal island wilderness is now protected, forever.
